House Prices Increase Slightly in St. Louis

St. Louis house prices bounce back a bit

Housing prices in metropolitan St. Louis recovered slightly in the third quarter, according to government statistics released today.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency said its purchase-only index for St. Louis rose 2.43 percent between June and September, ending a string of seven straight quarterly declines. The index shows that house prices in the metro area are still down 5.4 percent in the past year, and 14.8 percent below their peak in early 2007.

For the nation as a whole, the purchase-only index showed a price gain of 0.2 percent price in the third quarter, but is down 3.7 percent in the past year. And, the FHFA notes, if you adjust for inflation, the real price of houses has fallen 8.1 percent in the past year.
